Job Description:

On behalf of UTMB’s Academic Enterprise, the Vice President, Academic Finance is responsible for the overall supervision and oversight of financial operations, activities, direction and planning, including: strategic financial planning, financial accounting and reporting, decision support, financial and operations analysis, accounting, budget, business plan development, capital budgeting, operating funds management, and benchmarking in conjunction with the Institutional Chief Financial Officer, Vice President of Decision Support & Chief Data Analytics Officer, Vice President & Chief Financial Officer of Health System, Vice President of Business & Finance Administration and Vice President of Finance - Institutional Support.

Scope: The Vice President, Academic Finance is an integral member of the UTMB Finance team and works directly with the Executive Vice President, Provost and Dean of the John Sealy School of Medicine, Dean of the School of Nursing, Dean of the School of Health Professions, Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Dean of Public and Population Health, the Chief Physician Executive and other Academic Enterprise (AE) leaders to assure optimal financial results and systems for all missions of the Academic Enterprise.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Works directly with the Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer and other AE leaders to assure optimal management of Academic Enterprise financial and operational issues.

  • Collaborates within Institutional Finance and the Vice President, Decision Support & Chief Data Analytics Officer’s offices in providing a full mission view of financial operations, activities, direction and planning.

  • Participates in Clinical Enterprise Proforma creation and review including but not limited to service line and faculty profitability across all missions.

  • Establishes and monitors financial goals and objectives of the Academic Enterprise.

  • Oversees finance, accounting, reporting, decision support, operations analysis, benchmarking and budget activities, as it relates to the Academic Enterprise.

  • Oversees patient billing and receivables management activities.

  • Advises Academic Enterprise leadership on finance matters, concerns and issues; assisting with critical business decisions.

  • Responsible for operating funds management.

  • Responsible for establishing an effective internal control environment.

  • Oversees cost management and revenue enhancement activities.

  • Responsible for long term planning, budgeting and forecasting.

  • Develops strategies and plans to achieve long-term financial and strategic objectives.

  • Works with institutional executive management and finance leaders on financials and operational issues involving the Academic Enterprise and other UTMB components

  • Serves as a business/finance advisor to the Deans and Chairs of the Academic Enterprise

  • Oversees reporting of Academic Enterprise financial information to UT System, the LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education), and other outside entities.

  • Maintains effective relationships with other entity vice presidents of finance and other members of the President’s Council, UT System and other senior leadership.

  • Sets and monitors goals for Academic Enterprise finance staff and reviews staff member performance.

  • In collaboration with other institutional leaders, helps to establish and monitor goals and objectives of shared services operations.

  • Participates in planning, development and implementation of Academic Enterprise information systems.

  • Actively participates with Business and Finance colleagues in completing initiatives, goals and priorities.

  • Develops productive relationships with UTMB personnel across campus while accomplishing institutional objectives.

  • Manages special projects as assigned.

  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of decision support, financial accounting, budgeting, BI systems and Microsoft Office.

  • Possess a strong understanding of financial statements and operations and the related financial relationships within a Health system and Academic Enterprise.

  • Must have a sound working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, practices, and procedures.

  • Ability to analyze/evaluate data and make appropriate decisions/recommendations.

  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively work and communicate with individuals at all levels of the institution.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Effective critical thinking skills.

  • Hands-on management style with the ability to develop, prioritize and accomplish goals.

  • Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MBA or MHA and/or CPA

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience, including five years in a senior management position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in Accounting or Finance.
